Glaciers you can walk into, waterfalls you can walk behind, and a lagoon so blue it doesn’t look real — Iceland is the definition of a coolcation. This 8‑day road trip is how I help couples and small groups see the best of Iceland at a relaxed, unhurried pace.
Why Iceland (And Why Now)
Iceland rewards travel in every season — you’re really just choosing which version of the country you want. In summer, you’ll have long daylight hours and easier driving; in shoulder season (May and September), you’ll find fewer crowds, better rates, and a real chance of Northern Lights without deep‑winter conditions.
Your 8‑Day Iceland Road Trip With PaylorMade Travel
Think of this as your “best of” route: Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, South Coast waterfalls, glacier lagoons, and back to the city — with space built in to actually enjoy it.
Day 1 – Arrive + Blue Lagoon
Arrive into Keflavík (KEF), pick up your rental car or meet your driver, and head straight to the Blue Lagoon. I always recommend the Premium package here for the extra amenities and that first drink in hand. It’s the perfect way to shake off jet lag and ease into Iceland.
Day 2 – Reykjavík & Snæfellsnes
Spend the morning getting to know Reykjavík: Hallgrímskirkja’s tower view, the Old Harbour, and a stroll along Laugavegur. In the afternoon, many of my clients love a guided day trip to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula — dramatic cliffs, a black church, and a taste of “mini Iceland” in one region.
Day 3 – Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon
Drive or join a small‑group tour through the classic Golden Circle: Þingvellir National Park, Geysir and Strokkur, and the powerful Gullfoss waterfall. On the way back, I often add Kerið Crater and lunch at Fridheimar Farm (tomato greenhouse) before ending the day soaking in the more local Secret Lagoon.
Day 4 – Silfra Snorkel + Langjökull Ice Cave
Today is all about glaciers. Float between continental plates in Silfra Fissure’s crystal‑clear water, then ride a monster truck up onto Langjökull glacier to walk through luminous blue ice tunnels. This is one of those “only in Iceland” days that clients talk about for years.
Day 5 – South Coast: Waterfalls & Black Sand
Head south toward Vik, stopping at Seljalandsfoss (where you can walk behind the waterfall) and Skógafoss. These are two of the most photographed waterfalls in the country — for good reason. Finish the day on Reynisfjara black sand beach, watching the waves crash against basalt columns.
Day 6 – Vik → Jökulsárlón & Diamond Beach
Drive east from Vik, pausing at Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon if conditions allow, then continue to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. Here you’ll see icebergs drifting quietly out to sea and glittering chunks of ice scattered along black sand. Many clients rank this as the highlight of their entire trip.
Day 7 – Skaftafell Glacier Hike + Return To Reykjavík
Join a guided glacier hike in Skaftafell/Vatnajökull National Park, then start the journey back toward Reykjavík. This day is a beautiful blend of adventure and scenery, with plenty of photo stops and time to take in Iceland’s lava fields and coastal views.
Day 8 – Reykjavík & Departure
If your flights allow, squeeze in one more stroll along the Old Harbour or a whale‑watching excursion. Then it’s back to Keflavík, drop off the rental car or meet your transfer, and say “see you later” to Iceland — most travelers leave already plotting their return.
Rental Car vs. Private Transfers
Iceland is one of the few destinations where I almost always recommend a rental car for road trips. Distances between sights are long and the landscape is constantly changing; self‑drive gives you the freedom to:
- Stop when the light is perfect on a waterfall or rainbow.
- Pivot your day around weather (which changes quickly in Iceland).
- Linger at a view or café without watching the clock for a driver.

Top Hotels To Stay At In Iceland
One of the easiest ways to elevate an Iceland itinerary is by choosing the right hotel in the right place. For most first-time travelers, I recommend splitting the stay between Reykjavík and Vik, with an optional night near the glacier lagoon if the itinerary allows.
